Bhumi Odissi Summer School 2023

1-7 July

Kingston University of London

Join us for this incredible opportunity to study with odissi master artist Bijayini Satpathy over a weeklong intensive, where you will learn a deep, powerful, detailed and yet accessible approach to dance practice and interpretation.

Bijayini is a name that does not require introduction, but if you have never studied with her you will want to know that she works from a confluence of worldviews, bringing together an unwavering rootedness in the style of Odissi with western and eastern understanding of anatomy, energy flows, fitness, embodied imagination and somatic practice.

She will be teaching a combination of body conditioning, odissi technique, dance theory and musicality, including her research into Natyasastra charis and abhinaya technique.

WOrkshops Details:

Bijayini Satpathy will focus on the movements from Natyashastra, especially the 32 Chārīs and their variations. She has worked with her movement anatomy mentor, Irene Dowd, to better understand the anatomical function of these movements. She will teach these movements along with positions and movements of major and minor limbs from Natyashastra. These practices  will be taught as conditioning techniques as well as dance vocabulary.

In the Odissi sessions, Satpathy will teach Odissi technique according to her unique pedagogy that she has developed through a 20-year research process.

5 hours per day for a total of 35 hours if you attend the entire Summer School.
