Technique:
This class is open level, it will include a combination of basic technique with an invitation to deepen the understanding of Odissi as a movement practice through a focus on nuances and dynamic enhancement. It offers an opportunity to build solid foundations in this style, gradually inviting students to develop clarity, precision and movement details. We work on:
Correct and safe alignment in the basic stances
Flexibility and strength
Torso isolation and articulation of the spine
Understanding of fundamental arms and legs positions in odissi (Mudras)
Rhythmic understanding and clarity of footwork (Tala)
How to energise extremities and cultivate presence
Units of Movement coordinating major and minor limbs (Odissi Stepping practice)
Repertoire:
In this class, (for intermediate only) we will continue to work on Batu. This is an opportunity to learn this staple item (Choreography by Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra) from scratch or to brush it up and taking it to the next level. Batu is rich in beauiful poses inspired by ancient temple sculptures portraying archetypical representations of the apsaras (celestial women) playing musical instruments and adorning themselves. Batu is also very rich rhythmically and it provides a solid training in ‘odissi tala’.
Fee (TERM 1)
Technique only: 10 sessions £180, Drop In £20 per session
Technique + Repertoire: 10 sessions £250, Drop In £30 per session
Payment should be completed before the starting of the term classes.
You can agree instalments with me but fee will need to be paid in full before start of classes.

In the technique session we will work on building, strengthening, expanding and refining our odissi movement vocabulary, covering both pure dance and expressive elements, following Bhumi Methodology.
In the repertoire session we will continue to study Manikya Veena Mangalacharan, developing our embodied understanding of the piece, our performance skills and understanding of how to interpret the music.

Details:
In this short course we will work on Odissi abstract and expressive vocabulary. We will study elements of this beautiful technique, such as arms and mudras combinations, exploring sculpturesque poses, languid and vigorous steps, that harness both the feminine (lasya) and the masculine (tandava) energies within our bodies. We will learn devotional gestures and embodied storytelling techniques by studying a piece of traditional abhinaya from the spiritual poem Geeta Govinda.
This course is suitable to all levels and beginners with dance experience are welcome. If you have any question or doubt do not hesitate to contact us.

All the above classes are aimed at the serious student who wants to delve into the spiritual depth and beauty of this art form. The beginner sessions are open to those who are new to Odissi and would like to try. Please be mindful that it takes a few months for an initiated body to start savouring the aesthetic fulfilment that this dance brings within. Give it time!
