Maryam is an odissi Indian classical dancer, who holds love and devotion to art as her path to spiritual growth and self-realisation. Since beginning her journey with odissi in 2009, she has returned to India regularly for intensive training periods, studying under world renowned Guru Sujata Mohapatra and international dancer Colleena Shakti, as well as attending workshops in the UK with leading Gurus of the dance form, including Madhavi Mudgal and Ileana Citaristi. Maryam performs regularly in the UK as a soloist and as part of the Odissi Ensemble, a performing group the first of its kind in the UK. Dedicated to raising the profile of odissi through high quality performance with live music, they toured their production Gods and Mortals in 2017 and are continuing to develop work on new production concepts. Maryam is also a dedicated yoga practitioner and qualified teacher, and her focused studies of movement technique, and experiences of the cultural context of odissi have developed her skill as a dancer of grace, sincerity and sweetness.
